Cowork and chat are one Claude now. Here is what changes for you.

On September 16, 2026, Anthropic started merging Claude Cowork and chat into one Claude. It is rolling out to Pro and Max plans first, in the app on web, desktop, and mobile, over a few weeks. Team and Free plans follow later, and Enterprise admins get at least 30 days’ notice before anything changes.

Here is the quick test. Open Claude and look at the box where you type. If it still shows a Chat chip and a Cowork chip, you have not been moved yet. If the chips are gone, you have.

What changed

Until now you picked where a task went. A quick question went to chat. A bigger job, one that opens your files and builds something, went to Cowork. Anthropic says the part people found frustrating was deciding which was which, and that work started in one place did not carry into the other. So they stopped making you choose. You bring the task, Claude works out what it needs, and it can keep going after you close your laptop.

Three more things landed the same day. Claude Docs and Claude Slides are new, in beta on paid plans. Claude Design now works inside a normal conversation instead of its own place. Ask for a document and you write it together. Ask for a presentation and Claude drafts the slides, which you can edit, present from Claude, or download as PowerPoint or PDF.

What it means if you run a small business

You lose a decision, and that is a good thing. Every conversation can now do the heavy work. That also means every conversation needs to know how your business works, because the report Claude writes while you drive to the office is only as good as what it read first.

Approvals work the way they did. By default Claude asks before it takes an action. You can let it keep working and check in only when something needs a closer look, and you keep the final say. My advice has not changed. Keep it on asking for anything that touches a customer, money, email, or a file you cannot recreate. There is one small difference on the merged version, which is that the mode chip offers two choices, Manual and Auto. The old Skip all approvals option is not there, which is no loss.

Your setup carries over. Anthropic’s own note says your chats, projects, artifacts, connectors, and skills are where you left them. So if you built a folder with your rules and files, it still applies, and it matters more now, since the whole app runs on it.

If you never set Claude up for your business, the gap just got wider. A blank conversation that can now build a whole report will build it the way a new hire would, from what you typed in the last five minutes. A conversation that reads your handbook first builds it the way your business does it.

What to do this week

Look at the message box and see whether you have been moved. There is nothing to turn on either way.

Check the mode chip under the message box. It should read Manual until you trust a pattern well enough to hand it to Auto, and never Auto for anything connected to a live tool.

Hand over one job you would normally build yourself. Anthropic’s suggestion is the next report or deck. Mine is smaller. Try the next customer reply you would have written from scratch. Ask for it in one line, read what comes back, and notice what it did not know about your business. That list is your to-do list.
