Claude Haiku 5.5 is here. The small model got an effort dial.

October 26, 2026

On October 7, 2026, Anthropic shipped Claude Haiku 5.5. That finishes the 5.5 family, because Opus 5.5 came out on September 22 and Sonnet 5.5 on September 28. I said in the Sonnet 5.5 post that Haiku was coming, so here is what it is and where it fits in a small business.

I read Anthropic's announcement, its help center and its pricing page on October 12, 2026. Every figure below is Anthropic's own, with that date on it, and the names in the picker move often enough that part of this will be out of date in a few weeks.

What Haiku 5.5 is, in plain words

Anthropic calls it the cheapest, fastest and most capable small model it has released. On cost, it says Haiku 5.5 runs about 75 percent cheaper than Haiku 4.5 on average. On speed, it says this is its fastest model at each model's standard speed. One customer quoted in the announcement, Box, reports about half the delay of Haiku 4.5.

The jobs Anthropic names for it are the high-volume, repetitive ones, such as summaries, sorting things into groups, database queries and live customer support. That list sits very close to what I have told you to hand Haiku, which is a pile of short jobs where the answer is already in the text.

Anthropic also says plainly where it stops. For complex agentic coding, it says Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 are the better fit. Outside of coding the announcement gives no Opus comparison, so I will not invent one.

What Anthropic says changed from Haiku 4.5 to Haiku 5.5 on October 7, 2026, cheaper by about 75 percent, faster, and an effort setting for the first time on a small model.

The dial it gained

This is the change I care about most, because it touches something I taught. Lesson 1.1 of the Pick the Right Claude course, written on September 14 for Haiku 4.5, says Haiku has no effort dial. Open the effort menu with Haiku selected and there is nothing to choose.

The announcement says Haiku 5.5 is the first small model from Anthropic with an adjustable effort setting, with levels from Low up to Max. The help center article on changing the model, read October 12, lists Haiku 5.5 among the models that have the effort selector. So the line in the course about Haiku no longer holds for the new version.

The same help center article says thinking cannot be turned off in Claude when you use Haiku 5.5. That matches what it already says for Opus 5.5 and Sonnet 5.5, and the effort menu is the lever that is left.

I could not open the picker from where I wrote this, so I have not seen how the effort menu looks on Haiku 5.5 in the app. Open yours before you rely on it.

The effort setting on the smallest model, none on Haiku 4.5 according to the course and a selector on Haiku 5.5 according to the help center.

Where it fits in your week

The pricing page I read on October 12 lists Haiku on the Free plan and on Pro, Max and Team. It says Haiku without a version number, so it does not tell you which one your plan gives you. Your own picker does.

The rule from the September 23 post has not changed. Start on the everyday model, which is Sonnet 5.5. Drop to Haiku when the job is short and obvious and you already know the shape of the answer. The course's example week at a small landscaping business has two jobs like that, pulling addresses out of twenty booking emails and answering one customer about a date, and those are the right size for Haiku.

One week at a small landscaping business, each job matched to a model with the reason, from the Pick the Right Claude course.

What a cheaper and faster Haiku changes is how often the drop is worth it. If the answer is already in the text, a smaller model that is better than the last one costs you less of your week and keeps up with you. If the job needs judgment, such as a customer who is upset, a contract or numbers that do not add up, the size of the model is the wrong thing to save on.

What does not change

A better small model does not know your prices, your customers or how you write. That comes from the files Claude reads at the start of a job, and Haiku 5.5 on an empty setup writes the same blank template that every other model does, only faster.

What to do this week

Open your picker and look for Haiku 5.5 under the model names. Then take one small job you did by hand this week, such as sorting a stack of emails by what they are asking for, and run it on Haiku 5.5 at the default effort. Read the result against what you would have done yourself. If it is right, that job now belongs on Haiku.

If you have a scheduled task pinned to Haiku 4.5 by name, open it and look at the model. Lesson 3.3 of the course covers why old names get retired.

The next step

Pick one repetitive job, run it on Haiku 5.5 today, and keep the result next to your own.
